Principles of
Alveolar Distraction Osteogenesis
Chapter One Section I

A. Prior to tooth loss, an equilibrium exists between the tooth, periodontium, alveolar bone, and gingiva. Each structure depends on the other to maintain its morphology and health.

B. The ideal implant prosthesis would exactly reproduce the functional and esthetic role of the tooth and periodontium. The volume of alveolar bone would be maintained or restored. The contour and health of the gingiva would be maintained or restored.
