I. The distraction process involves creating an osteotomy at a distance from the site of pathology, the ridge crest. The distraction device is an endosseous implant which control the transport and fixation of the bone segment.

J. Under the control of the distraction device, the mobilized alveolar segment is transported coronally in a slow, incremental manner. Bone forms within the distraction zone.
