Principles of
Alveolar Distraction Osteogenesis
Chapter One Section VIII

M. A typical mandibular implant site requires elevation of the crest and management of the knife-edged contour. The majority of the ridge crest is cortical and is not ideal for placement and maintenance of an implant.

N. Distraction osteogenesis involves controlled transport of the mobilized alveolar segment followed by fixation. The segment is transported to place the cortical ridge crest beyond the reconstructive objective (outlined in red). The effect of the regeneration process is to elevate and widen the ridge.
