I. The threaded rod emerges through the mucosa at the crest of the ridge. The exposed end of the rod may be covered by the stayplate for comfort or esthetics.

J. Gradual activation of the distraction device results in lowering of the ridge crest and expansion of the gingiva. The tooth was transported on the bone segment and required reduction of the crown as the movement progressed.
